The body mass index is a measurement used to determine whether your height and weight ratio equates to a health concern. Doctors often use the body mass index (BMI) to assess patients because the index is simple, it correlates to fatness, and applies to both men and women. To determine BMI, weight in kilograms is divided by height in meters, squared.

To calculate your body mass index, enter your weight and height usign either the English or Metric tables below. A BMI of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight and 30 or above is considered obese.

Here is a shortcut method for calculating BMI for a person 5'5" and 149 lbs:
  1. Multiply weight (in pounds) by 703     (149 x 703 = 104747)
  2. Multiply height (in inches) by height (in inches)    (65 x 65 = 4225)
  3. Divide Step 1 result by Step 2 result to get your BMI     (104747 / 4225 = 24.8)
  4. Thus, the BMI = 24.8 or rounded to 25
